What should I want my children to take a certification for? You may have wondered why it is that we –and by we, I mean teachers of English, schools and publishing houses– insist on you paying for your kids to get a certificate. “They are just kids” one may say. That’s right, they are just kids. Can you imagine the significance that getting a certificate issued by one of the most renowned universities or by an international organization would have in a kid’s life?

We need to be acknowledged. Kids like to be acknowledged. Carrying a certificate proves that the child has a certain level of proficiency in the English language. Their effort has to be acknowledged. It’s like saying: “Hey, all you’ve worked for has finally paid off.” You can truly show what your level of English is. No need to guess. It shows where you come from and where you are headed.

To talk about certifications of English, we must refer back to the CEFR. CEFR stands for Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It was developed to provide a common basis for the explicit description of objectives, content and methods in second/foreign language education. There are 6 levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2, where A1 is the most basic level. There’s a correlation between the certifications and the CEFR. This means there is a path to follow and the certifications are the steps that help.

Taking a certification is a big deal. It is an invaluable experience that will teach your kids about life. It is preparation for the future. It means less nervousness when facing other occurrences of this nature. Everybody loves it when our accomplishments are acknowledged, especially children. By receiving a certificate, they will get the motivation they need to continue to want to study the language. I took the FCE when I was 15 and it was a door opener. After that I took a teacher’s course because… why not? I had a good level and even though I hadn’t thought about being a teacher of English, it is always good to have a backup plan. Who would have thought that I would find the passion around which everything revolves in my life? Besides, we all take pride in being good at something, don’t we? What we are giving our kids here is an edge.

There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing the entity that will issue the certificate. In this case options can be provided so you choose the one that suits your needs. In most cases, the school makes the decision, but you can also go to a language school where different options can be provided so that you choose the one that fits.

Our ultimate goal is for kids to have a first approach to certifications, to experience success and to have fun.

Ana Figueroa Liaño holds an Undergraduate Degree in English Teaching issued by Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. She was certified by CEPE in “Diplomado Inicial para Profesores de Español como Lengua Extranjera”.
Ana has considerable experience as a teacher of English. She has worked at language centers and at different educational levels, mainly Universidad del Valle de México in high school and UNAM in college.
She has been certified by Cambridge (CAE grade A), by CONOCER (estándar de competencia con clave EC0217” Impartición de cursos de formación del capital humano de manera presencial grupal”) and by Google (Google Educator Level 1).
Ana Figueroa also holds wide experience in giving lectures and workshops in the field of ELT.
Ana has been working for Richmond Publishing since 2014. At Richmond she gives talks and workshops to teachers of English. She teaches the TKT preparation courses. Furthermore, Ana has written educational articles for Editorial Santillana’s Blog.
